Ochre is amongst the earliest natural pigments used by mankind, derived from naturally tinted clay containing mineral oxides. Rightfully known as ‘Earth’s colour,’ Ochre was associated with gold in Ancient Egyptian times, considered to be eternal and indestructible and was used extensively in tomb paintings.
It was also used by the Red Indians and Africans as body paint (a red variant mixed with cod liver oil) to protect them from sunlight and harm. Ochre is also known to have a ‘healing effect’ on the human eye. It is intense and powerful and conjures visceral sensations.
