Did you know? Every year, the beauty industry creates more than 120 billion units of packaging waste! It’s time to not only take care of yourself but also our beautiful planet. Here’s how you can help by following a few sustainable skin care tips.
1) Choose paper or glass over plastic
Rule #1. Paper never needs to end up in a landfill, making it the holy grail of green packaging. This organic material can be recycled. Unlike flimsy plastic, glass is durable and can be recycled over and over again. Clearly making it the safer alternative — not just for the planet, but for your health too!
2) Use less water
Join the washcloth revolution! Tip: When you clean your face, instead of letting the water run as you splash your face – get an eco-friendly washcloth. Wet the cloth with water, turn off the tap, then use it to clean the product off your face.
3) Avoid long hot showers
I know, it’s tough! I personally love a hot shower but, not only is cranking up the water heater bad for our planet, it’s also bad for our body. It strips your skin of natural oils. It also makes hair brittle! Tip: Try 3 minutes of hot water and cool off with cold water for the remainder of your shower.
4) Know what you feed your skin and read the label

Beware of products that contain phthalates, mercury, toluene, lead, formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, parabens or BHA. These chemicals are considered to be the most detrimental to our health and subsequently our planet. Tip: Making your own home-made products? Avoid paraffin oil, propylene glycol and ethylene. Opt for alternatives: beeswax, cocoa butter and vegetable oils. Aura products, like Restore and Revive Face Oils are a great example of 100% natural in glass bottles, that won’t harm you or the environment.
5) Use multi-purpose products.
It’s simple – less product, means less packaging, means less waste. Look out for 2 in 1 products or get creative with products that you already own. Tip: Aura’s 100% natural Soap Bars, like the Activated Charcoal Bar, makes an excellent natural Shampoo that smells great and keeps dandruff at bay!
6) Try your hand at DIY Skin Care
Thanks to the subcontinent’s magical local herbs and spices, one can create a Do-It-Yourself Beauty Regime at home! Tip: A blend of coconut oil, honey, chickpea powder and turmeric makes a beautiful face mask for toning and brightening the skin.
Fun fact: If you have Vitamin E capsules lying around, add one or two to your skin care blends for a natural preservative.

7) Re-Use and Re-Generate
Why not re-use those bottles or use them for household purposes? Got an empty spray mist bottle you don’t know what to do with? Tip: Fill it up with water, add a few drops of pure tea tree essential oil and pure lemongrass essential oil. You’ve got yourself an environmentally friendly and effective surface cleaner for the house! Did you know? Aura offers customers to send them used bottles for instant re-fills!
