History never looked so beautiful!

A soft thud creates a calm, therapeutic beat as a wooden block, dipped in vibrant colours rhythmically hits the fabric laid out on the table. Originally dating back to China, block print was developed extensively in the subcontinent along the banks of river Indus. For centuries, sub-continental block print was coveted throughout the world, where block printed textiles were exported from the region to the far and middle east, Africa and Europe.

You might have noticed how your Amma’s ajrak shawl is still so evergreen and haseen after decades of being in a paitee. It is because block print is such a beautiful and meticulous craft.

Small blocks carved out of Sheesham are mostly used for block printing. Known as “chappay” locally, they are engraved with different indigenous patterns which are then dipped liberally into paint and ink and printed onto fabrics. But block printing is not an easy task. These wooden blocks a minimum of four to five days to prepare on average for one single block and this does not include the actual process of block printing, which is the inking part- imagine the mehnat. The result: colourful textiles in a wealth of patterns that once became, and still are, a symbol of wealth and status.
